Support meeting – summary 1
Hi We welcomed D and J who haven’t been before. D said that he enjoys talking with people. He also told us he was looking for solutions. D had a stroke in the right side of his brain. This has given him left-sided weakness and perceptual difficulties which will be greater in the left half of space. J and D said that he sometimes doesn’t recognise her because he does not recognise faces. So, when he sees J, he identifies her by what she is wearing. If he doesn’t recognise her, then she’s a stranger. The stroke has knocked his confidence. He relies on J to be there. So, from his point of … [Read more...]
Support meeting – Summary 2
Hi T started us off. She remembered previous professional advice that she probably could develop certain capabilities. She didn’t follow that advice partly because her partner felt that she was unable to do some of these things. She said that she’s discovered that she can do things that she thought she was no longer able to do because of her brain injury. She is currently reassessing her potential. She asked: “How much more can I do with practice? How do I know how far I can increase my capacity?” She also had various negative feelings about herself because she might have been further … [Read more...]

Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it. Helen Keller. Helen Keller is one of my heroes. As a little girl she was struck down by what doctors in the 1880s termed a ‘brain illness’; although it is suspected in modern times that she may have had meningitis or encephalitis. She became deaf and blind as a consequence. My brain injury left me in no way as impaired as Helen Keller, although it did mean living in a different way. A matter of great consequence eight years … [Read more...]

She said that she gets frustrated and upset on those frequent occasions when she is given advice that doesn’t make sense to her. She said that her husband often tells her that she is going the wrong way about things. She said that she was coming to the group for more understanding and to get bits of information/guidance that she can use. C said that she had … [Read more...]
Support meeting – Summary 4
Hi We welcomed a new member, S. He said that he wanted to meet people that understood where he was coming from. We all agreed that that was one of the main reasons why we all met together. He said that he had had a brain injury at birth. He subsequently had 2 head injuries. People tell him what to do but they don’t understand why he can’t do what they say. T visited us after a long absence. She said that she had split up with her long-term partner, Ian. She’s living with her daughter, P, who also joined us. T’s response when C introduced herself to the newcomers was that it is important … [Read more...]

I didn't know if my granddaughter had learned her colours yet, so I decided to test her. I would point out something and ask her what colour it was. She would tell me, and she was always correct. At last she headed for the door, saying wisely, "Granny, I think you should figure out some of these for yourself." … [Read more...]
